Can your child’s diet boost her intelligence?

When it comes to your child’s brainpower, it seems that both nature and nurture play a role. Louise Fulton Keats looks at how your toddler’s intellectual ability can be affected by the foods you put on her plate. Many of us think our intelligence is something we’re born with, passed down by our parents and set in concrete. While it’s true that genetics play a part, in recent years, we’ve learned that diet also plays an important role in shaping our cognitive ability.

How passengers are fighting back against airlines, and winning

IN JUST the nine months since it launched, German website refund.me says it has already processed passenger claims for airline compensation from 122 airlines for passengers in more than 50 countries spanning five continents. Competitor  EUClaim.com  just reached the milestone of €10 million euros ($13.5 million) in airline compensation collected on behalf of troubled fliers. The number of sites doing what  refund.me  does is growing fast, and UK newspaper  The Guardian  recently predicted that the trend will continue, since individual passengers have had plenty of trouble collecting compensation – to which they are entitled – on their own, especially from smaller and discount carriers. For the time being the companies are mainly European, but that doesn't mean they can't help international fliers. The European Union has been ahead of the curve in air passenger rights, detailing specific (and substantial) mandatory compensation for flight delays and cancellations.

Will my toddler get enough calcium?

It is recommended that children aged from 1-3 consume at least 700 milligrams of calcium a day, which is equivalent to 2 cups of cow's milk.  There are plenty of calcium-rich, dairy-free alternatives out there such as soy, These lactose-free options allow you to make the same recipe you would for your family simply by swapping out the dairy product for soy or tofu, for example.  Foods such as beans, cabbage, oranges and almonds are also great sources of calcium as outlined below:

Myths and Facts About Breastfeeding

MYTH FACT 1.       Formula is as good as human milk. Human milk is far superior and cannot be duplicated.  The nutrients and antibodies in human milk are uniquely suited to the physical and mental development of the human baby.  Human milk contains human growth factors while formula based on cow’s milk contains bovine growth factors. The composition of human milk changes during a feeding and as baby grows to meet baby’s changing needs.  2.       Women should not breastfeed in front of other people. Breastfeeding is normal and natural and in New Jersey, women have a  legal right  to breastfeed in public places. Women who are shy about breastfeeding in public can practice how to feed discretely in front of a mirror to gain confidence.  3.       If the mother has to go back to work or school, she should not start out breastfeeding. Many women continue to breastfeed after returning to work or school.  They exclusively breastfeed while on maternity leave then e

Parking on public holidays (City of Melbourne)

Some parking restrictions are different on public holidays. For parking signs that state  days of the week  (including clearways, loading zones and no stopping signs), parking and time restrictions on the signs do not apply and you do not need to pay the parking fee if the parking spot is metered. For all other parking signs that  do not state days of the week  (including clearways, loading zones and no stopping signs), you must observe parking and time restrictions and pay the parking fee if the parking spot is metered.  Left panel Right panel Parking restrictions apply on the days specified (circled in red) unless they fall on a public holiday or day in lieu. No days of the week are specified, so the parking restrictions apply every day of the year, including public holidays and days in lieu. More Info

10 Fun Ways to Help Your Child Learn

1. Think ouside of the box - literally. Stop buying into fancy boxes containing "state-of-the-art" devices with exorbitant claims to build your child's brain. Instead, take your cues from your child. By taking the time to notice what your child is interested in, you can begin to see the environment in a whole new way. 2. Plan a filed trip - to your own back yard. It's great to travel to the farm or to the zoo,but you don't need to go that far to build your child's brain. Kids can get a tremendous amount of intellectual stimulation from their own back yard, where they can witness the miracle of blades of grass blowing in the wind, of ants building homes, of tiny life teeming down in the dirt.

The Life of VW Jetta and Me

Timeline January 2009 - I abandoned Japanese cars and bought a German car, Volkswagen Jetta (118 TSI with 7-speed DSG). February 2009 - Experienced lost of power twice on the road.  Restarting the engine resolved the issue.  Back to dealer, they cannot identify any problem.  Anyway, the problem was away for 2 years... December 2012 - After almost 4 years of smooth drive with only 20,000km, I hit the jackpot.  Engine light went on.  Car rocked greatly.  I brought it back to dealer; after two weeks in the shop, I finally managed to get a loan car.  My Jetta would be in the shop for weeks apparently. January 2013 - My car engine was rebuilt after 6 weeks.  Yeah!  I drove the car back; just before I parked it into the garage.  The engine light went on again.  Went back to dealer and somehow it was fixed in 2 days.

Australia Cash Rate - June 2013

At its meeting today, the Board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 2.75 per cent. Information becoming available since the previous meeting is consistent with global growth running a bit below average this year, with reasonable prospects of a pick-up next year. Commodity prices have declined from their peaks but, overall, remain at high levels by historical standards. Inflation has generally moderated over recent months and monetary policy has been eased further in a number of countries. Financial conditions internationally are very accommodative.

Prices of many items in Costco have increased steady over the years.  Not everything is cheap at Costco.  Don't be fooled into thinking that Costco is cheaper than anywhere else. Here are the list of items that are still considered a bargain in my personal opinion of price/quality ratio. Beet Short Rib Plain Flour Brown Rice Sun Rice

How to watch youku outside of China

I have tried to watch Chinese TV drama on youku. However, youku was blocked by someone so that only people within China region can watch it. I have been looking for a way to bypass it and tried out various ways, including mason addon in FireFox. Nothing worked. Finally, I found out someone posted a different way to bypass this restriction. All you need to do is to change proxy to a auto config file:
